This is a portfolio of my most recent work at Wavelength, a venture-backed behavior change app for weight loss.
I served as Head of Product Experience, leading a cross-functional team to bring the Wavelength app from concept to an iOS & Android app with category-defying engagement.
Program Design
My role at Wavelength was combining our team’s PhD knowledge, scientific research, and user research to create a compassionate, human-centered approach to weight and wellbeing. I designed a 4-month program blending neuroscience, nutrition science, therapy techniques and mindfulness. Then, I created a low-code beta and tested it with a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Content Design
I wrote and produced the program’s foundation: engaging 10-minute audio lessons that helped users reduce cravings and eat better. Each lesson blended personal stories with guidance, creating a parasocial relationship between the listener and the “host” — a real person who struggled with dieting and diet culture. I designed the lessons to increase intrinsic motivation by creating connection, reducing shame, and increasing feelings of empowerment.
Product Design
I spearheaded product design from initial concept to wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity design (Figma, Illustrator), beta testing, and launching in the app stores. The app used game mechanics to trigger motivation without the app feeling too “gamified.” We tapped into intrinsic motivation through relatable, bingeable content and a well-managed community with group challenges and interactive live experiences. We also incorporated variable rewards, progress bars, notifications, group challenges, and milestone unlocks.
Product Design
Our users were lifelong dieters, exhausted by counting and tracking, and craved simplicity. “Tell me exactly what to do and when to do it.” So we designed a homescreen that served as their checklist for the day, with the ability to set notifications for daily lessons, or remind them to complete specific tasks at mealttimes, before bed, or throughout the day.
Product Research & Iteration
After conducting UX surveys and interviews, I designed a daily “quiz” to personalize the experience and give users a sense of progress. We prototyped this through an SMS chatbot, and beta users loved it. When we implemented it into the app, DAU/MAU increased from 22% to 34%.
